Thanksgiving is a time for giving thanks and spending time with family over a nice dinner. Write about your most unforgettable meal.

Prompt response:  I remember when I had my most unforgettable meal. It was the turkey we had last year. It was very delicious! Summary:  Today, we did an assessment over "The Life You Save May Be Your Own". Reflection:  I learned how to use stories to get better at comprehension.

Write about a time when you realized you needed to look out for yourself in a silly or harmless situation—maybe dodging a pop quiz, escaping a group chat argument, or remembering at the last second to submit an assignment. How did choosing wisely make your life easier?

Prompt response:  I remember a time when I realized I was in a silly situation. Earlier this year, I dodged a quiz for APES I forgot about. It made my life easier because I was able to make it up another day, and I was able to get a good grade on it. Summary:  Today, we continued reading "The Life You Save May Be Your Own". Reflection:  I learned how to use stories to get better at comprehension.

Describe a time that you had an encounter with a homeless person, either directly or indirectly. What did you think and how did it make you feel?

Prompt response:  I had many encounters with homeless people. However, they were mostly on exit ramps from freeways, hoping to get money. When my grandmother passed by some, sometimes she gave money to them. I feel that it's kind, but I wouldn't probably do the same. Summary:  Today we started reading "The Life You Save May Be Your Own". Reflection:  I learned how to use stories to get better at comprehension.

Write about what you are thankful for.

Prompt response:  I am thankful for the experiences I had so far. I'm also thankful for the friends I have, too. Basically, I'm thankful for everything! Summary:  Today, we did another vocabulary lesson. Reflection:  I learned some new vocabulary words. I might use the words that I learned sometime later in my speaking and writing.

In “A Rose for Emily,” Miss Emily’s actions shock the reader—she kills her fiancé and keeps his body in her home for years. People often react with disbelief when they hear about real-life stories that seem just as unbelievable. Write about the most shocking or “craziest” news story you have ever heard. What happened, and why did it stand out to you? How did people react to it, and what does it reveal about human behavior?

Prompt response:  I remember hearing about a shocking news story once. Once, there was this 20/20  story about an incident called the Slenderman Stabbing. What happened was that two girls lured another girl into the woods and stabbed her 19 times in an apparent attempt to appease the fictional character Slender Man. The stabbing was widely condemned. Summary:  Today, we continued to read "A Rose for Emily". Reflection:  I learned how to use stories to get better at comprehension.

Miss Emily’s house once represented pride and tradition, but over time it became a symbol of decay and isolation. Describe a place that holds deep memories for you—positive or negative—and explain how it reflects part of who you are or how you’ve changed over time.

Prompt response:  There is a place that holds deep memories for me. That's Henderson Middle School. For 3 years, being a middle school student has helped me change in such ways as friendships. Before middle school, I was very, very shy. But after I left Henderson for Lakeside, I had more friends. Summary:  Today, we read "A Rose for Emily". Reflection:  I learned all about the story. This impacted my knowledge as I am more prepared for the quiz.

Think about the vocabulary words from Lesson Two. Write about a time you saw or heard one of these words outside of the classroom — maybe in a movie, song, social media post, or book. Describe how it was used and whether the context helped you understand the word better.

Prompt response:  I heard about the word arable  before. I heard it many times, actually. I heard about it a lot in the news when issues about things such as arable land are discussed. And yes, it has helped me understand the word better. Summary:  Today, we did another vocabulary lesson. Reflection:  I learned some new vocabulary words. I might use the words that I learned sometime later in my speaking and writing.

Thinking about “The Rockpile,” which parent or guardian in your life has been the strictest when it comes to discipline? Explain how their approach to discipline has influenced you or shaped your behavior.

Prompt response:  Lately, it has been my mother who has been the strictest when it comes to discipline. Her approach to discipline has influenced me as when she becomes concerned about stuff she does some things like taking away my phone. This has motivated me to do more work. Summary:  Today, we read "The Rockpile" and we worked on a group assignment for the passage. Reflection:  I learned about what a rockpile in the context of the story means. This affected my learning because it makes it easier for me to come up with discussion questions for the story.

Thinking about "The Rockpile," what is something your parents forbade you from doing when you were growing up? Explain what it was and why they might have set that rule.

Prompt response:  I remember something my parents forbade me from doing. It was going to bed after 9 PM. I think they set that rule so that I can get enough sleep needed for school the next morning. Summary:  Today, we read "The Rockpile" and we worked on a group assignment for the passage. Reflection:  I learned about what a rockpile in the context of the story means. This affected my learning because it makes it easier for me to come up with discussion questions for the story.

Words shape how we think, write, and interpret literature. Think about a time when learning a new word or understanding a specific term helped you better analyze a text, express an idea, or make your writing stronger.

Prompt response:  Once when I learned a new word, I could then better analyze a text now that I had more words I know. Using more complex words also helped make my writing stronger. Summary:  Today, we did another vocabulary lesson. Reflection:  I learned some new vocabulary words. I might use the words that I learned sometime later in my speaking and writing.
